Do you ever feel like you’re not making the progress you want in your golf game? Are you constantly making the same mistakes over and over again, leading to unnecessary strokes on your scorecard and a lack of confidence on the course? If so, you might be guilty of some common golf swing mistakes that are killing your game. But don’t worry, we’ve got some tips to help you resuscitate your game and get back on track.
1. Rolling the club inside on the takeaway
One of the biggest mistakes golfers make is using their arms and wrists too much during the takeaway. This causes the club to roll inside and leads to a flat backswing. To fix this, try making slow backswings without hitting a wall. If you’re using your wrists and forearms too much, you’ll notice it.
2. Swaying too much in the backswing
Swaying in the backswing reduces your ability to rotate and generate speed. Many golfers believe they need to shift their weight to be powerful, but the momentum from pushing off the ground is enough. To fix this, stand next to a wall and make a backswing without letting your body move closer to the wall.
3. Leveling out the shoulders during the backswing
During the backswing, it’s important to maintain the tilt of the upper body towards the ground. This helps with the ascent of the hands, arms, and club in the backswing. To fix this, cross your arms on your shoulders and get into your golfing posture. Slowly move towards a wall until your head gently rests against it, and make backswing motions without letting your head move.
4. Short swings
If you’re not hitting the ball far enough, it could be because you have a short backswing. A longer backswing allows for more force and club speed during the downswing. To fix this, stand one foot away from a wall and make a slow backswing until the clubhead touches the wall.
5. Open clubface
An open clubface can cause errant shots and lead to other bad habits. To fix this, stand in front of a mirror and make a small backswing while watching the clubface. Make sure the face is looking down during the takeaway and pointing up to the sky at the top of the backswing.
By fixing these common golf swing mistakes, you’ll be on your way to improving your game and gaining more confidence on the course. So grab your clubs and start practicing!
