Ashford United FC player Callum Pollard, aged 12, from Kingsnorth in Ashford, recently had an incredible experience representing England as a Football Association Youth Ambassador. Callum, a pupil at Homewood School, played a vital role in helping secure the UEFA EURO 2028 football tournament for the UK and Ireland. The announcement was made in Switzerland after a bid presentation to UEFA’s Executive Committee, which was supported by football youth ambassadors from all the home nations. One of the highlights of Callum’s trip was meeting Welsh superstar Gareth Bale, who also played a key role in the presentation.
Callum’s selection as a youth ambassador was based on his inspiring footballing story and his commitment to promoting the development and diversity of the game in his local community. He currently plays left wing for Ashford United U13s team in the Kent Youth League and is actively involved in supporting the newly-formed Ashford United Disability teams. Callum not only assists with training sessions but also coaches two teams and helps organize a new sensory football club alongside his mum Laura.
Reflecting on his trip to Switzerland, Callum said, ‘It was great fun going to Switzerland, and meeting Gareth Bale was a bit nerve-wracking because I’d never met a famous player before. But he was absolutely lovely.’ Callum proudly wore his Ashford United kit during the trip, but he was overjoyed when the FA presented him with an England kit, a branded coat, and other goodies.
Back at school, Callum’s friends and teammates are in awe of his dream trip. ‘They think I’m really lucky,’ Callum said with a delighted smile. His mum, Laura, expressed her pride in Callum’s achievements, saying, ‘We are all so proud of Callum. It’s amazing that he was nominated by the Kent FA and selected to go on this trip. These memories will stay with him forever.’
Callum’s dedication to making sports enjoyable for everyone, especially those with disabilities, is truly commendable. His passion and commitment have not only made a positive impact on his local community but have also played a significant role in bringing the UEFA EURO 2028 football tournament to the UK and Ireland. Ashford United Football Club is incredibly proud of Callum’s achievements and encourages everyone to visit their website for more information.
