Now, let me give you a little history lesson. The Darlington Charity Cup first started way back in 1907. The trophy was generously donated by Herbert Pike Pease, 1st Baron Darlington, who was part of the famous Pease family in Darlington. Since then, over 30 individuals have benefited from the cup’s annual donations, receiving a total of £18,800. That’s a whole lot of goodness!
You know what’s even cooler? The cup is run by a dedicated committee of five amazing people. Brian Scaife and his buddy Roger Bradley took over the reins in 2010, and they’ve been doing an incredible job ever since. They turned the cup into a competition, but with a twist. Instead of keeping the money for themselves, they donate it to charity. How awesome is that?
Brian shared, “We almost lost the cup a while back, but I’ve been playing in it for years. So, my friend and I decided to take charge and turn it into a competition for a good cause. Since 2010, we’ve been running the show and have donated around £16-17k to children with illnesses, including cancer.” Wow, talk about making a difference in the lives of those who need it most!
In 2022, the cup donated £250 to Zoe’s Place Trust, an organization that supports young children with life-limiting or life-threatening complex illnesses. And let me tell you about Alfie McBride, a young lad who received a £1,000 donation in 2018. Alfie has a rare genetic chromosome variation called 16p13.11 microduplication, and the cup’s donation helped create a calm and peaceful environment for him at home. Isn’t that heartwarming?
Now, here’s the exciting part. The committee is on the lookout for a worthy recipient for this year’s funds. They’ve been doing such incredible work, helping so many individuals each year. It’s truly inspiring!
