England Outraged as South African Player Cleared of Racism Despite Second Complaint

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is absolutely fuming with World Rugby for clearing South African hooker Bongi Mbonambi of racially abusive behavior towards Tom Curry. In the World Cup semi-final defeat, Curry approached the referee and asked, ‘Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c—, what do I do?’ It has now come to light that Curry also alleged abuse by Mbonambi during a previous match in 2022. The investigation found that Curry’s allegations were made in good faith, but there was insufficient evidence to take disciplinary action against Mbonambi. The RFU expressed deep disappointment with World Rugby’s decision, stating that it denied the opportunity to hear Curry’s voice and independently assess the evidence. England is also furious about a video that surfaced showing South African players seemingly making light of the situation. Curry and his family have faced a barrage of abuse on social media, prompting the RFU to condemn such behavior. South Africa captain Siya Kolisi reached out to Curry to offer support. World Rugby announced that no charges would be pressed against Mbonambi just minutes before he was named in South Africa’s team for the World Cup final. World Rugby emphasized its commitment to investigating allegations of discrimination and condemned the social media abuse directed at both players. Curry shared the RFU’s statement on Instagram, expressing his agreement. SA Rugby stood by Mbonambi, stating that he had denied the allegations from the beginning and that they had absolute faith in his honesty and integrity. The focus for the team remains on the upcoming match against New Zealand.
