Golf is becoming increasingly popular in Northern Michigan, particularly in Cheboygan and Indian River. The First Tee Golf Program, organized by the Cheboygan County Junior Golf Academy, had a fantastic season, attracting numerous kids to the Cheboygan Golf & Country Club and Indian River Golf Club. This eight-week program aimed to make golf enjoyable for young players while teaching them the fundamentals. Each week, a three-hour session was held, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
According to Ed Kosanke, President of the Cheboygan County Junior Golf Academy, over 100 kids participated in golf lessons in Cheboygan and Indian River this summer. This is a significant number and rivals the participation in other popular sports like little league and softball. The program has a laid-back atmosphere, and the kids seem to love it.
Attendance per week averaged 88 kids in Cheboygan and 25 in Indian River, representing a 20% increase from the previous year. The success of the program can be attributed to the dedicated volunteers and the First Tee program, which provides three teaching golf professionals. Pat Linton and Olwyn Hancock have played major roles in the success of the Cheboygan County Junior Golf Academy and the First Tee program.
So, what makes the First Tee program so popular in these communities? According to Kosanke, there are several factors. Firstly, golf is an individual sport, and every child, regardless of their physical abilities, can excel at it. The program also has a low-key competitive element, but the dropout rate after eight weeks is minimal, indicating that parents appreciate the program. Additionally, golf is a relatively new sport for many of the kids, and the program aims to introduce them to the game.
The First Tee program not only teaches golf skills but also focuses on a child’s development, emphasizing self-confidence, communication skills, integrity, and sportsmanship. Thanks to donations from local businesses and individuals, the program is free for young golfers. The goal is to instill a love for golf in the kids and encourage them to continue playing throughout their lives. While the golf team is not the primary objective, it serves as an indicator of the kids’ improvement each year.

Golf is a sport that offers lifelong enjoyment, and the First Tee Golf Program is playing a vital role in introducing young players to the game. With its inclusive and fun approach, it’s no wonder that the program has been such a big hit in Cheboygan and Indian River.
