Five Mid-Major College Basketball Teams to Keep an Eye on in 2023-24

When it comes to mid-major college basketball teams in the 2023-24 season, one question stands out: Who will be the next Florida Atlantic University (FAU)? But before we dive into that, let’s not overlook the possibility that FAU could once again surprise us.

FAU is ranked 10th in the preseason AP Top 25 poll, higher than powerhouse teams like Gonzaga, Arizona, Kentucky, and North Carolina. Even KenPom’s ranking of 37th is quite impressive, considering it puts FAU in the top 10% of all Division I teams.

But enough about FAU, let’s shift our focus to other mid-major teams that could make waves this season.

Drake Bulldogs
Drake is coming off their first Arch Madness title in 15 years, and they have a mix of experienced and new players. Returning starters Tucker DeVries and Darnell Brodie will be key contributors, and the addition of transfers Atin Wright, Kyron Gibson, and Ethan Roberts adds depth to the roster.

Grand Canyon Lopes
Led by Rayshon Harrison and Gabe McGlothan, the Lopes are looking to build on their success from last season. Harrison, a transfer from Presbyterian, is a scoring machine, while McGlothan dominates inside the paint. Jovan Blacksher Jr., who missed most of last season due to injury, will also be a valuable asset.

Liberty Flames
After a successful run in the Atlantic Sun, Liberty is now in the Conference USA. Despite losing Darius McGhee, the Flames have a strong core of veterans who will step up. Kyle Rode, Colin Porter, Shiloh Robinson, and Brody Peebles will be relied upon to continue Liberty’s tradition of solid defense and rebounding.

Loyola Chicago Ramblers
Joining the Atlantic 10 last year didn’t go as planned for Loyola, but they have the potential to bounce back. With improved shooting and better ball control, players like Philip Alston and Braden Norris can make a difference. The Ramblers will face tough competition in the A-10, but they have the talent to compete.

Yale Bulldogs
Yale has been a force in the Ivy League for the past few seasons, and they show no signs of slowing down. Matt Knowling, John Poulakidas, and August Mahoney provide scoring and shooting from beyond the arc, while Bez Mbeng anchors the defense. Although they’ll miss EJ Jarvis, head coach James Jones has the experience to keep the Bulldogs competitive.

These five mid-major teams are definitely worth keeping an eye on in the 2023-24 college basketball season. They may not have the same recognition as the big-name programs, but they have the potential to make some noise and surprise us all.
