Hey there, folks! I’ve got some exciting news for you today. The amazing women of Gloucester City Hockey Club are fighting tooth and nail to keep their beloved sport at Oxstalls Sports Park. Let me fill you in on the details.
So, picture this: it’s the end of September, and Gloucester City Hockey Club is hit with some devastating news. Their home venue, Oxstalls Sports Park, is closing its doors just two weeks into the season. Can you believe it? The venue operator decided to walk away with less than 24 hours notice, leaving the club in a tough spot.
But fear not, my friends! The resilient members of Gloucester City Hockey Club are not giving up without a fight. They’ve started a petition to reopen the multi-sport facility, and guess what? Nearly 7,000 people have already signed it! Talk about community support.
Now, here’s the good news. The local council has given hockey the green light to return to Oxstalls Sports Park, although with limited facilities. It’s not ideal, but hey, it’s a step in the right direction. The women’s 1s team, who are currently in Division One North, have been making waves in the league. They recently secured a fantastic 1-0 victory at Ben Rhydding and followed it up with a thrilling 5-3 win against Olton & West Warwickshire. They’re currently sitting in second place, just behind the leaders Buckingham. Go, team!
Let’s talk about the team’s journey for a moment. Emily Rogers, the centre forward and club captain, has been with Gloucester City Hockey Club for an impressive 12 years. She joined just as the club gained National League status for the first time. Talk about perfect timing! During her time with the club, they’ve only had one coach, Gary Tredgett, who recently stepped down after an incredible 15-year tenure. It was truly the end of an era.
But fear not, my friends! The club found a new coach in Trevor Done, who has been a part of the club for years. He’s invested in every aspect of the club, especially the juniors. The club’s focus shifted to a long-term solution, rather than a quick fix. They wanted someone who would nurture the young talent and build a strong foundation for the future.
Last year, the club made a conscious effort to integrate the 1s and 2s teams. They focused on developing young players and creating a harmonious environment. It was a consolidation season, and the team did a fantastic job of maintaining their Division One status. They finished eighth out of ten teams, which is no small feat.
Now, let’s talk about the current season. Chloe O’Donoghue, a product of the club’s junior system, has taken on the role of captain. She’s been doing an incredible job, and her defensive skills are top-notch. The team is having a blast this year, and they’re currently sitting at the top of the league. It’s a competitive league, but they’re holding their own.
The team’s next big challenge is a home game against league leaders Buckingham in November. They’re hoping to recreate the electric atmosphere they had when they beat Bowdon at home last year. It’s going to be an exciting match, that’s for sure!
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room. The council still needs to figure out the long-term plan for Oxstalls Sports Park. The club is hopeful that everything will be sorted out soon, and they can focus on what they do best: playing hockey.
And that’s the latest update on Gloucester City Women’s fight to keep hockey at Oxstalls Sports Park. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for them and show our support. Go, Gloucester City Hockey Club!
