New Zealand golfer Kazuma Kobori has made an impressive start at the 14th Asia Pacific Amateur Championship, taking the lead after a fantastic opening round. Despite challenging conditions at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Kobori managed to shoot a five-under-par 66, putting him two shots ahead of his competitors. Starting on the 9th tee, he got off to a strong start with four consecutive birdies and added another at the 17th hole. He then played solidly on the front nine, carding eight straight pars to finish with a score of 66. This round matched the course record set by the late Sir Michael Bonallack. If Kobori wins this championship, he plans to stay amateur until after The Open Championship. Australian golfer Jasper Stubbs also had a great round, shooting a three-under-par 68. The winner of the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship earns a spot in The Open Championship and The Masters Tournament, making it a significant opportunity for the participants. Despite his strong start, Kobori remains focused on taking it one day at a time and not getting ahead of himself. The Asia Pacific Amateur Championship has played a crucial role in promoting golf in the region and has produced notable champions like Hideki Matsuyama and Cam Smith. The next championship will be held at Taiheiyo Club’s Gotemba Course in Japan.
