Four members of Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club have recently been inducted into Yorkshire Tennis’ Hall of Fame. These local tennis legends include Simon Ickringill, Andrew and Richard Hutchinson, and Katie Charnock.
Simon Ickringill, who is 66 years old, has had an impressive career as a tennis player and coach. He has won the Yorkshire men’s singles championship eight times and has represented Yorkshire in various tournaments. Ickringill has also coached at the national, regional, and county levels, and even served as the head coach at ILTSC. He has played for England in Home Internationals and has represented Great Britain in multiple age categories.
Andrew Hutchinson, 59, and his brother Richard, 55, have also made their mark in Yorkshire tennis. They have represented Yorkshire at different age groups and have been key players for the White Rose team. Richard, who now resides in Harden, has even won the ITF Great Britain Open Indoor Tournament for over-55s. Both brothers have also represented Great Britain in international competitions.
Katie Charnock, from Guiseley, is another talented player who has been recognized for her achievements. She became the head coach at Heaton Tennis Club at the young age of 21 and has contributed to Yorkshire’s success in County Week. Charnock has won multiple Yorkshire titles, including the women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Her mother, Joyce Howden, was also inducted into the Yorkshire Tennis Hall of Fame for her remarkable career as a tennis player.
The Yorkshire Tennis Hall of Fame also welcomed other notable inductees. Roger Taylor, a three-time Wimbledon semi-finalist, was honored for his achievements in the sport. Sue Mappin, a talented Sheffielder, was recognized for her success in women’s doubles. Both Taylor and Mappin have left a lasting impact on the tennis world.
The Hutchinsons and Ickringill were presented with their Yorkshire Hall of Fame certificates at a special awards ceremony held at Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club. This recognition is a testament to their dedication and contributions to the sport of tennis in Yorkshire.
