Medvedev Advances in Erste Bank Open as Rublev Secures ATP Finals Spot

Top seed and defending champion Daniil Medvedev progressed to the quarter-finals at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna after defeating Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday. Medvedev was forced to dig deep for a 3-6 6-2 6-4 triumph over the experienced Dimitrov in front of a packed crowd at the Wiener Stadthalle on Austrian National Day. He described it as a great match and expressed his happiness for managing to win. Medvedev finished with 31 winners, including 14 aces, to improve his head-to-head record against Dimitrov to 6-2.

Joining Medvedev at the season finale in Turin will be Andrey Rublev, who also booked his quarter-final spot by beating Matteo Arnaldi 7-5 6-3. Rublev expressed his excitement for qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals and said he is looking forward to being part of the event for another year. The other players who have already qualified for the year-end championships are Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the former NATP Finals champion, is next in line to qualify for the ATP Finals. He won his match against Tomas Machac in Vienna. In another tournament, Dominic Stricker upset second seed Casper Ruud to earn a place in the Swiss Indoors, Basel quarter-finals, while Alexander Shevchenko secured a career-best win against Taylor Fritz. Only three singles places remain at the year-end championships.
