No Automatic Open Exemptions for LIV Golfers, Says Martin Slumbers

Hey golf enthusiasts! I’ve got some news for you. Martin Slumbers, the Chief Executive of The R&A, recently addressed the media speculation about automatic Open exemption places for LIV golfers, and he made it clear that those rumours are ‘completely off the mark.’ He emphasized that there have been no changes to the qualification criteria for The Open Championship, and there won’t be any announcements until early 2024.

Slumbers mentioned that The R&A is currently reviewing the exemptions and conditions of entry for next year’s Open Championship, as they always do. The updated criteria will be published in early 2024. He assured everyone that the conditions are designed to create pathways for the best players in the world to compete at Royal Troon.

Although there have been speculations in the media about LIV players receiving automatic exemptions, Slumbers dismissed them as baseless. He stated that The R&A never discusses exemptions with anyone, and they would never disclose any changes to the qualification criteria before an official announcement.

During the press conference, Fred Ridley, the Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, also addressed the invitation policy for The Masters Tournament. He mentioned that there are no plans to change the criteria at the moment, but they always review them. Ridley highlighted that decisions regarding the qualifications are made in the best interests of The Masters Tournament.

Slumbers made it clear that The Open Championship already provides opportunities for any player in the world to qualify and compete. He emphasized that regardless of the tour they participate in, players have a chance to showcase their skills at The Open Championship.

So, golfers, don’t worry! The Open Championship will continue to offer fair opportunities for all players. Stay tuned for the official announcement of the updated qualification criteria in early 2024. Until then, keep swinging those clubs and enjoying the game!
