Novak Djokovic is not holding back in his criticism of tennis bosses and he is determined to keep speaking out. The Serbian tennis star, who has an impressive record of 24 Grand Slam wins, believes that the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) should have more influence in decision-making on the ATP Tour. Djokovic has been in outstanding form this year, clinching three major titles at the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open. He is now calling for the PTPA to be given more power to protect the interests of players.
In an interview with Serbian outlet Sportal.rs, Djokovic highlighted the conflict of interest that arises from the current structure of decision-making in both the ATP and WTA. He explained, “Players and tournaments each have a 50 per cent share in decision-making, which often leads to conflicts. I have been a member of the players’ council and the president for a total of six to seven years, so I know how things work. The system is designed in a way that players usually get a smaller piece of the pie, and they are not given a role in decision-making.”
Djokovic also expressed his frustration with the lack of attention given to important issues in tennis. He believes that the sport’s monopoly prevents a deeper exploration of these topics. He stated, “Many media outlets choose not to write about these issues because it goes against the interests of those who pay them. It’s a vicious game, but as long as my voice is heard, I will continue to speak up. I hope that the PTPA will benefit players like Marco Trungelliti in the future. We have already indirectly and directly influenced the ATP to reconsider some decisions. Although we are not allowed direct participation in the decision-making process, we have still managed to bring about positive changes and provoke them.”
Djokovic cited an example of the ATP increasing the financial support for injured players as a result of the PTPA’s efforts. While he welcomed this step, he emphasized that more needs to be done to address the challenges faced by players. He highlighted the need to discuss topics that are often considered taboo, such as the financial struggles of non-elite players. Djokovic concluded, “I will continue to point out the obvious and raise awareness about issues that are being ignored.”
