Hey folks! Sad news today as we remember the passing of Dennis Gethin, a true legend in the world of rugby. Born in Seven Sisters, he had an incredible career both on and off the field. He served as the Secretary and later the CEO of the Welsh Rugby Union, and also held the prestigious position of President from 2007 to 2019. Talk about dedication! In fact, he was the second longest-serving President in the history of the union. Only Horace Lyne, who served from 1906 to 1947, held the position longer. Now that’s impressive!
But Dennis wasn’t just about titles and positions. He was known for his hard work, his sense of humor, and his unwavering support for the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust. This man truly cared about the game and the people involved in it. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was awarded an OBE in 2016. Well-deserved, I’d say!
Before his time with the WRU, Dennis served as the chief executive of Taff Ely Borough Council. And after leaving the union, he even became a member of the BBC Broadcasting Council in Wales. Talk about a versatile guy!
Dennis’s love for rugby started at Neath Grammar School, where he honed his skills before heading off to Cambridge University. He even played for the Welsh Secondary Schools team, winning two caps in 1963. And let’s not forget his impressive performance against England and France. He was a goalkicking full-back who knew how to score those points!
But it wasn’t just about the game for Dennis. He understood the importance of community and the spirit of rugby. He believed in honoring and preserving that spirit, and he lived by that belief. He was a true role model both on and off the field.
Dennis Gethin will be sorely missed by the rugby community and beyond. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to his wife, Jan, his family, and his friends during this difficult time. He leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. Rest in peace, Dennis, and thank you for everything you’ve done for Welsh rugby.
