Cal basketball has hit a roadblock before the start of the season. Jaylon Tyson, the highly rated transfer from Texas Tech, has been denied immediate eligibility by the NCAA. This means Tyson will have to wait until the 2024-25 season to play for Cal, unless the university’s appeal is successful. Despite this setback, Tyson still has two years of college eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-6 sophomore is considered the 26th-best transfer in this year’s group, according to ESPN. He had an impressive season at Texas Tech, averaging 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting over 40% from three-point range. Tyson’s standout performance came against West Virginia, where he scored a career-high 27 points by making 11-of-15 three-point shots. Another notable transfer for Cal is Fardaws Aimaq, a 6-foot-11 center ranked as the 35th-best transfer this year. Aimaq and Tyson were teammates at Texas Tech, with Aimaq unfortunately limited to 11 games due to injury. Cal’s 2023-24 roster also includes transfers Jalen Cone from Northern Arizona and Keonte Kennedy from Memphis. Although Mike Meadows initially transferred to Cal from Portland, he later joined Saint Louis University. Despite the setback, Cal basketball fans can still look forward to the future with Tyson and the talented transfers on the team.
