Wimbledon tennis grounds are set for a massive expansion after a recent planning victory. The All England Lawn Tennis Club has received approval from Merton Council to add 38 new courts, including a state-of-the-art 8,000-capacity show court. The plans, which were submitted in 2021, are now awaiting a decision from Wandsworth Council. As part of the expansion, a large golf course adjacent to Wimbledon Park will be transformed into a new 23-acre public park, accessible to everyone throughout the year. This exciting project is expected to bring £38 million to the London economy and create 250 new jobs. Despite some opposition from local residents, the All England Club had already gained support from golf club members by providing a £64 million fund. The development also aims to enhance biodiversity and create a thriving environment for nature. The ambitious masterplan was first announced in 2013. Sally Bolton, Chief Executive of the All England Club, expressed her delight at the approval from Merton Council and highlighted the long-term benefits of the project. She stated, ‘Our proposals will secure the future of The Championships and provide a transformation in community amenities, including a new 23-acre park for everyone to enjoy. We now eagerly await the decision of Wandsworth Council’s Planning Committee.’
