It may seem like a bold statement, but the Praga motorcycles, specifically the 500 BDS and 350 BCS models, heading to the autumn vintage auction at the Retro Garage auto-moto fair, are worth more than just a pretty penny. While the celebrated Jawa 500 OHC may be the pinnacle, these Praga bikes are rarer than a Ferrari California with a manual gearbox (only 2 units were made).
The Acquired 500 BD
When it comes to the rarer model, the Praga 500 BDS, this gem was acquired from the Breitfeld-Danek company. This company offered a half-litre motorcycle (500 BD) DOHC with a three-speed gearbox, a top speed of 105 km/h, and elevated handlebars for a comfortable upright riding position.
After acquiring the company, the motorcycle was renamed Praga 500 BDS, but it didn’t differ much from its original version. The model was produced in six series until 1935, with only 1901 complete units and a series of 500 incomplete sets.
The offered 500 BDS from the fifth series, dating back to 1932, is in its preserved original condition with minimal exceptions. According to Retro Garage, the motorcycle has been out of use for many years and will not be revived before the auction to maintain its authenticity.
If the auction winner wants to put it on the road, they will have to use vintage license plates as the original registration document is no longer available. Nevertheless, this gem will be auctioned starting at CZK 890,000, with the final price potentially reaching the magical threshold of CZK 1.5 million. And who knows, maybe even more, as it is truly a unique investment opportunity.
350 BCS as an Alternative to the Half-Litre
Adding to the Praga collection at the auction is the 350 BCS model, which was created as a more affordable and modest alternative to the top-tier half-litre. This motorcycle is powered by an air-cooled OHC engine and a three-speed gearbox. Interestingly, the “three-fifty” Praga motorcycles were equipped with an air filter from the factory to enhance the carburetor’s lifespan.
Another interesting feature is that the rear-wheel drive is not transmitted by a chain but by a cardan shaft, similar to most Moto Guzzi motorcycles. However, the cardan shaft is not braked, as the brakes are directly integrated into the wheels.
And what about the production numbers? Once again, they are very low, making this machine a rare commodity. In 1930, a series of 500 units was produced, followed by another 500 units between 1932 and 1934. Then, production ceased.
The motorcycle up for sale is from 1930, belonging to the first series. It was renovated many years ago, and the majority of the components used are original. Unlike the 500 BDS, this model, sourced from a private collection, has been revived before the auction, receiving a new battery and being prepared for final adjustments.
The unique Praga 350 BCS will be offered starting at CZK 790,000, with the estimated final price hovering around CZK 1.3 million. And perhaps even more, as it is an incredibly rare find, just like the “five-hundred”.
Both of these Praga motorcycles will be publicly auctioned on November 11, 2023, at the Výstaviště in Lysá nad Labem, as part of the traditional event called Retro Garage. Here, we will see if these rare Czech motorcycles find their new owners. After all, they are rare and financially demanding investment items.
