Redwood High Juniors Dominate Girls Tennis to Claim League Championship

The Redwood High Class of 2025 is making a big impact on MCAL girls tennis. With juniors leading the way in the top singles spots, the Giants secured their second consecutive league championship with a convincing 7-0 win over Branson. This victory solidifies Redwood as the undisputed number one team in MCAL, having defeated the Bulls in all three of their matchups this season. Last year, Redwood dethroned Branson in the playoffs after splitting their regular-season meetings. The success of the team can be attributed to the leadership of first-year coach Tracey Porter, who has brought a positive and uplifting energy to the players. The juniors on the team, including Julia Laury and Gwenn Ricordel, showcased their skills by only dropping a combined five games in their singles matches. Jordan Marotto, the team’s number one singles player, dominated her opponent with a swift victory. The highlight of the day was the intense match between Redwood freshman Julia Povio and Branson’s Audrey Gilmor. Povio fought hard and ultimately emerged victorious, avenging her previous loss to Gilmor. The win was an emotional moment for Povio, who was in tears after the match. With this win, Redwood secures a spot in the upcoming North Coast Section Division I tournament. Branson, the reigning NCS D-II champions, is expected to receive an at-large berth and a high seed. The MCAL singles and doubles tournaments will also take place, providing additional opportunities for players to showcase their skills. The expanded draws this year will allow for more participants and exciting matchups. The stage is set for an action-packed tournament, and fans can look forward to witnessing the talent and determination of these young tennis stars.
