Two teenage rugby players from Ripon are making waves in Yorkshire as they pursue their dreams of playing for England’s women’s team. Edie Cooper and Eden Hymas, students at Ripon Grammar School, have been recognized as among the best U18 players in the county. After a series of grueling selection days, they have secured a spot in Yorkshire’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) squad, which aims to support and develop the finest talent in the region.
Eden, 16, dedicates up to eight hours a week to her sport. She described the selection process as highly competitive, with constant pressure from being under observation. Eden, who plays as a winger and fullback, first started playing rugby at the age of seven, following in the footsteps of her older brother. However, she had to take a break from the sport after suffering a broken leg during a match against Harrogate. Inspired by England rugby player Abby Dow, Eden is determined to make her mark in the sport.
Edie, also 16, began her rugby journey at the age of seven at Ripon RUFC. She draws inspiration from the success of the Red Roses England Women’s Team and aspires to play for England professionally in the future. Edie found the selection process challenging, with multiple sessions over several months to assess the players. The coaches wanted to gain a comprehensive understanding of each player’s abilities. Despite the nerve-wracking wait for the results, Edie is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
Being part of the Centre of Excellence means that Edie and Eden now have the chance to be scouted by England and play alongside top-level athletes. They also have access to exceptional coaches and a team physiotherapist. Recently, they participated in the CoE national festival at Malvern College, where they competed against other elite teams. The girls performed admirably, winning two out of three games.
Edie and Eden, who both play for West Park Leeds and have represented Yorkshire at U15 and U16 levels, will train with the CoE squad twice a month in Sheffield and York. They will also have four playing opportunities throughout the season. With their determination and talent, these young rugby stars are well on their way to achieving their dreams of playing for England’s women’s team.
