The Indian women’s hockey team is all set to have a mental conditioning coach, and coach Janneke Schopman has confirmed the arrival of Peter Haberl to assist her. The team is currently playing in the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in Ranchi, a rare standalone multi-nation tournament for the women in front of home fans. After finishing with bronze at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, the team has a few crucial months ahead to earn their ticket for Paris 2024. Schopman, who previously worked with Haberl in the USA hockey team, is looking forward to utilizing his expertise as the team prepares for the Olympic qualifiers in Ranchi in January. Haberl, a sports psychologist from Austria, is well-known in the female team sports circuit and has worked with US water polo and rugby teams. Schopman is grateful to Hockey India for making this arrangement possible and hopes that Haberl’s presence will help the team learn and grow. The team’s chief coach also expressed her desire for similar assistance, like the men’s team, but unfortunately, it didn’t materialize. Despite feeling nervous in the first half of their match against Thailand, the Indian players showed great control and performance in the second half, securing a 7-1 victory. The team will face tougher challenges against Malaysia, China, Japan, and Korea in the upcoming matches.
