Hey there, folks! So, let’s talk about the recent field hockey match between James Madison University (JMU) and the mighty No. 4 Duke. It was a tough battle, but unfortunately, JMU came up short with a 4-2 loss. Bummer, right?
The game took place at the JMU Field Hockey Complex in Harrisonburg, Virginia. JMU, with a record of 3-9, faced their fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the season. On the other hand, Duke, with an impressive record of 12-1, proved why they are a force to be reckoned with.
Despite the loss, JMU put up a good fight. Senior Tori Carawan scored her sixth goal of the season, while junior Cassidy Strittmatter netted her third. Way to go, ladies! In goal, senior Brandelynn Heinbaugh made some incredible saves, swatting away six shots throughout the game.
Now, let’s talk about Duke’s performance. Hannah Miller led the attack for the Blue Devils, scoring a goal and providing an assist. Logan Clouser, Alaina McVeigh, and Brynn Crouse also found the back of the net, while Mary Harkins and Macy Szukics contributed with assists. Duke’s offense was on fire!
The game started with a quick goal from Duke’s Miller, who maneuvered around Heinbaugh and set up Clouser for the first score. The second quarter was a defensive stalemate, with no goals scored. However, Duke broke the deadlock in the third quarter, converting on a corner with a deflection from Crouse. Miller added another goal to give Duke a 3-0 advantage.
But JMU wasn’t going down without a fight. They responded with a goal of their own, as Alice Roeper’s shot ricocheted off Duke’s goalkeeper, Piper Hampsch, and Carawan was there to knock it in. Duke managed to score their fourth and final goal with a deflection from McVeigh, securing a 4-2 victory.
Despite the loss, JMU showed some promising signs. Strittmatter has been on fire recently, scoring twice in the past two games after a slow start to the season. Carawan has also been in top form, with three goals and an assist in the last three games. Keep it up, ladies!
In terms of statistics, Duke had the advantage in shots, shots on goal, and penalty corners. However, JMU managed to earn four penalty corners, which is a positive sign for their attacking game.
Head Coach Christy Morgan expressed her pride in the team’s performance, highlighting their desire, emotion, and energy. She emphasized the importance of resilience and bouncing back after tough games. Way to go, Coach Morgan!
Looking ahead, JMU will be facing Liberty in their next game on Sunday, October 15. Let’s hope they bounce back and come out with a win!
That’s all for now, folks. Stay tuned for more exciting field hockey action!
