Reflections on an Amazing Golf Season

The UW-Whitewater Women’s Golf team had an incredible season, winning their seventh consecutive WIAC championship. Senior golfer Haley Myers stood out with her impressive performance, tying for eighth place in the individual competition with a score of 245. Throughout the fall season, she maintained an average score of 82, ranking fifth on the team.

Q: What were your team’s goals for the season? Did you achieve them?

A: Our main goal as a team was to win the conference, and we successfully achieved that for the seventh year in a row. It’s a huge accomplishment for us, especially after last year’s tiebreaker. This time, we won by a larger margin.

Q: What were your personal goals for the season?

A: One of my personal goals was to set a new personal record, which I accomplished at the conference. I also aimed to improve my game and give my best performance on the course.

Q: What were some of the challenges your team faced?

A: One of our biggest challenges was having a younger team this year. We had to fill the number five spot after graduating six girls from the previous season. It took some time to figure out who would be the best fit for that position in the conference championships.

Q: Which were the team’s standout performances?

A: We had some great performances at Century World, where we won by just one stroke. Everyone played exceptionally well there. Although our performance at the conference wasn’t our best, it was enough to secure the victory.

Q: What were your best individual performances?

A: I shot a 76 when we played in Iowa, and at Century World, I scored a 79. Anything in the seventies is a great achievement for me. However, my personal record of 73 came at the conference.

Q: How did you first get into golf?

A: In high school, I used to play volleyball. When my brother’s golf coach was recruiting him for college, he asked if I played golf too because they were looking to recruit for the girls’ team. Initially, I told him about my volleyball background, but he convinced me to switch to golf and take it more seriously. He explained that there were more college opportunities in golf.

Q: What is your favorite golf memory?

A: My favorite memory is from last year’s spring break. The entire team went to Northern Ireland, where we played on various courses. Spending a week with the team and our families created unforgettable memories.

Q: Why did you choose to play golf at Whitewater?

A: Whitewater is quite far from my hometown in Somerset, Wisconsin. I wanted to challenge myself by going somewhere new and meeting new people. The team at Whitewater is amazing, and our coach has been incredibly supportive.

Q: Do you have any pregame superstitions?

A: I do have a few superstitions. Before every game, I always listen to the song ‘Africa.’ It’s been a tradition since high school. Additionally, my dad used to send me funny texts like ‘don’t suck’ to boost my spirits before playing.

It was an absolutely fantastic season for both me and the Warhawks. Although the fall season has come to an end, we’ll be back in the spring for the NCAA Division III Championships after qualifying by winning the WIAC championship.
