Edmonton Hockey Player Suspended for 8 Games After Skate Incident

An Edmonton junior hockey player has been given an eight-game suspension after a skate incident that resulted in an opponent’s neck being sliced open. The incident occurred during a game at the Castle Downs Recreation Centre in north Edmonton on September 27. The player, Nate Plaunt of the South West Zone Oil Kings, was penalized for a ‘deliberate kicking’ motion that injured Richie Compo of the Junior Braves. The league ruled that there was a kicking motion but no intent to injure. Compo’s parents have filed an assault complaint with the Edmonton Police Service and disagree with the league’s ruling. They plan to appeal the suspension, believing it should be longer than eight games. Compo, who was wearing protective gear at the time, is recovering from the incident and hopes to return to the ice soon.
