Hey folks, big news in the rugby world! Jonny May, the Gloucester winger, has officially retired from international rugby. Can you believe it? After the 2023 Rugby World Cup, May decided to call it a day and focus on other things. And what a career he had! With 36 tries in 78 test matches, he’s the second-highest try scorer for England. Only Rory Underwood managed to score more, with an impressive 49 tries. That’s some serious talent right there!
Now, you might be wondering how we found out about May’s retirement. Well, it seems like his teammate Courtney Lawes accidentally spilled the beans during a post-match interview. Oops! It happened after England’s bronze medal win over Argentina in Paris. I guess Lawes couldn’t keep the secret to himself.
May isn’t the only one bidding farewell to international rugby. Ben Youngs, England’s most-capped men’s player, and Lawes himself have also decided to retire after the Rugby World Cup. It’s the end of an era, my friends.
Interestingly, May wasn’t even supposed to be part of the squad for the trip to France. He was initially left out of the 33-man squad, but fate had other plans. Anthony Watson’s calf injury opened up an opportunity for May, who was waiting in the wings as a ‘first-reserve’. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
And boy, did May make the most of his chance. He joined Borthwick’s squad just in time for the Rugby World Cup preparations and didn’t miss a beat. In fact, he was one of England’s top performers throughout the tournament. But his shining moment came in the semi-final, even though England didn’t come out on top. May did an incredible job of shutting down the dynamic threat of Cheslin Kolbe. Now that’s what I call skill!
So, there you have it, folks. Jonny May, the try-scoring sensation, is hanging up his boots. We’ll miss seeing him in action on the international stage, but we wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Who knows, maybe he’ll make a comeback someday? Until then, let’s cherish the memories of his incredible career. Stay tuned for more updates!
