Being on the hot seat is the last place college basketball coaches want to be. It’s a list no one wants to be on, but it’s a reality for some coaches who need a successful season to avoid losing their jobs. Let’s take a look at five coaches who may need a good year to ensure they get another chance.
First up is Brad Brownell from Clemson. Brownell survived last year’s hot seat by finishing third in the ACC, but his team didn’t make the NCAA Tournament. If he misses it again, his job could be in jeopardy.
Next is Johnny Dawkins from UCF. He’s only made one NCAA Tournament in seven years, and now that UCF is in the tougher Big 12, it’s unlikely they’ll have much success. Dawkins could be looking for a new job next March.
Mike Hopkins from Washington had a promising start, but the past four years have been disappointing. If he doesn’t turn things around this season, it could be his last.
Jerod Haase from Stanford has been on the hot seat for three straight years. Despite not making any NCAA Tournaments in his first seven years, he somehow got an eighth year. If Stanford fails to make the tournament again, a change is likely.
Lastly, we have Kenny Payne from Louisville. Louisville is a prestigious program, but they had a terrible season last year. Payne’s second season needs to show improvement if he wants to keep his job.
Being on the hot seat is tough for any coach. These five coaches will need a successful season to secure their future in college basketball.
