RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University will start the season ranked No. 20 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25.
The 2023-24 season begins Tuesday for the Colonels at home against West Virginia Tech, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield. It will be EKU Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at the game. All faculty/staff can receive two FREE tickets. The first 500 fans will receive EKU Rally Towels.
Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at EKUSports.com or by calling 859-622-2122. Fans can also purchase season tickets in person from 9-5 p.m. at the ticket office located in the Olympic Sports Training Center.
EKU received 194 points in the Mid Major Top 25 Poll, just 10 points behind Appalachian State at No. 19. The Colonels are ranked in front of Ohio, Wright State, Colgate, Toledo and North Carolina-Greensboro. EKU is scheduled to play at UNCG on Dec. 7.
Gonzaga received 21 of the 31 first place votes and is ranked No. 1 in the poll. Saint Mary’s was picked first on 10 ballots and is No. 2. Northern Iowa, Akron and Drake round out the top five teams. Liberty is sixth.
EKU is the only Atlantic Sun Conference team ranked in the top 25. Future opponents Northern Kentucky, Kennesaw State and Queens received votes.
The College Insider.com Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, ASUN, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Coastal Athletic, Conference USA, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast and Western Athletic.
The Colonels were picked to win the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in two preseason polls conducted by the league office – a Coaches Poll and a Media Poll. EKU earned eight first-place votes in the Coaches Poll, seven more than any other team. The Colonels had 32 first-place votes in the Media Poll, 26 more than any other team. The Almanac, ESPN and Lindy’s also picked EKU to win the ASUN title this season.
Four starters and a total of 11 players return from EKU’s 2022-23 team that finished the season with a 23-14 record and advanced to the championship of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). EKU returns 84 percent of its scoring, 74 percent of its rebounds, 88 percent of its assists, 74 percent of its steals and 76 percent of its blocks from 2022-23.—
