Eau Claire Blugolds Dominate Saint John’s University in Thrilling Road Victory

Hey hockey fans! The Eau Claire Blugolds hit the road for the first time this season and came out with a bang, defeating Saint John’s University in a thrilling 4-2 victory. The game was a nail-biter, with the Blugolds scoring three goals in the third period to secure the win. It was an intense matchup, with both teams battling it out on the ice. The Blugolds dominated the first period, outshooting the Johnnies 19-5. They controlled the tempo of the game and won 14 out of 24 faceoffs. Despite their offensive pressure, the first period ended in a scoreless tie. In the second period, the game became more even as both teams fought for an advantage. Tyler Herzberg, a freshman from Germantown, Wisconsin, scored his first goal in a Blugold sweater to give Eau Claire a 1-0 lead. But the Johnnies quickly responded with two powerplay goals to take a 2-1 lead going into the second intermission. The third period was where the Blugolds really shined. Cade Lemmer, a sophomore from Tomahawk, Wisconsin, tied the game at 2-2 with a wrist shot from the slot. Then, with under five minutes left in regulation and on a powerplay, Willy Stauber, a senior from Duluth, Minnesota, fired a shot from the blue line that found the back of the net, giving the Blugolds a 3-2 lead. Quinn Green and Kyler Grundy assisted on the game-winning goal. The Blugold defense held strong in the final moments of the game, and Kyle Oleksiuk sealed the victory with an empty net goal. Max Gutjahr, the sophomore goalie from Appleton, Wisconsin, made 27 saves to earn his second win of the season. The Blugolds now have a 2-0 record and will be back on the road for their next game against Gustavus Adolphus College.
