The Highland Bears under-14 girls basketball team continued their unbeaten season with a massive victory over the Dunfermline Reign. The game took place at the Inverness Royal Academy Sports Complex, where the Bears showcased their skills and talent. Led by their dominant centre Chloe Sanderson, the Bears started strong and never looked back. Grace Alexander, a force to be reckoned with in Scottish Basketball, scored an impressive 29 points in just 18 minutes of play. Emily Seago also made her mark with 26 points, displaying her dribbling skills and accurate long-range shooting.
The Bears’ captain, Lexi Kershaw, provided leadership and contributed 8 points to the team’s success. Chloe Sanderson’s strong rebounding and inside plays added 12 points to the scoreboard. The Bears finished the first quarter with a commanding lead of 27-6.
In the second quarter, the Bears’ defense was outstanding, allowing the Dunfermline Reign to score only one successful free-throw. Esmee Wilson, Hannah Thomas, and Lucy Sanderson played a crucial role in limiting the visitors’ scoring opportunities. Isla Webster’s ball handling and Olivia MacLennan’s power moves further extended the Bears’ lead, with the halftime score at an impressive 33-7.
The Bears’ dominance continued in the second half, with notable contributions from up-and-coming stars Eva Skinner, Isla Devlin, and Jessica Waldie. Head coach Ross Waldie praised the team’s performance, stating that the future of the Highland Bears looks bright with these talented girls on the court.
In another impressive display, the Highland Bears under-16 girls defeated the Caledonia Gladiators by a score of 93-38. Ruth MacKay’s excellent ball control and distribution, along with her tenacious defense, set the tone for the game. Emily Hill showcased her adept footwork and scored a season-best 22 points. Emily Seago’s dribbling skills added 8 points to the Bears’ dominant first period, ending with a score of 35-10.
Although Baileigh Matte suffered an injury early in the second period, Lexi Kershaw stepped up and showcased her abilities as a guard. Mackenzie Bell and Olivia Brechin also delivered strong performances, helping the Bears extend their lead to 58-24 at halftime.
The Bears’ solid defense and secure ball handling from Lexi MacLeod and Emily Bell prevented any chance of a Gladiator comeback in the second half. The under-16 squad now looks forward to their upcoming match against City of Edinburgh BC.
Head Coach Anna MacArthur expressed her satisfaction with the team’s progress, stating that the girls are working well together and producing the performances she expects. She anticipates a close and exciting game against City of Edinburgh BC, confident that the Bears can come out on top, just as they did last season.
