Thrilling Victories and Championship Glory: High School Sports Recap

The high school sports scene was buzzing with activity on Saturday. Field hockey, tennis, and cross country state championships took place, crowning new champions. In the State Championship, East Greenwich emerged victorious over Moses Brown in a thrilling double overtime match, with a final score of 3-2. In the Division I title match, North Kingstown narrowly defeated South Kingstown 2-1 in double overtime. Meanwhile, Lincoln dominated the Division II title match, securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Chariho.

The State Tennis Tournament, held at Slater Park, showcased the skills of talented players vying for the championship in three divisions. In Division I, La Salle continued their winning streak by claiming their 10th consecutive title, defeating North Kingstown with a score of 4-1. Arianna DeThomas, a senior at La Salle, expressed her joy, saying, ‘It feels amazing! We worked really hard for this, and winning it in my last year with this team feels really good.’

In Division II, South Kingstown emerged victorious over Chariho with a score of 4-2. Alexa Clark, a sophomore on the South Kingstown team, shared her excitement, stating, ‘It feels so good! The team and I put in a lot of time and effort, and this accomplishment means a lot to us.’

In Division III, Providence Country Day triumphed over East Providence with a score of 4-2. Junior Eloise Wetherby described the experience as ‘such a good time’ and expressed her elation at the victory.

The success of these fall teams has brought great pride to the school. With volleyball and soccer also heading to the state championships, the atmosphere is electric. The girls’ state champions are Cumberland, while the boys’ state champions are Bishop Hendricken. In the girls’ state meet, Rory Sullivan from St. Ray’s emerged as the champion, while Sam Henderson from Cumberland claimed the title in the boys’ state meet.

It’s an exciting time for the school, with all three fall teams making it to the state championships. The hard work and dedication of the athletes have paid off, and the sense of accomplishment is palpable. Congratulations to all the winners and best of luck to the teams heading to the state championships!
