Proposed UF Golf Course on Alachua County Land Faces Evaluation

A development plan on one of Alachua County’s environmentally sensitive ecosystems will be evaluated on November 7th to determine what should be protected during potential development. The Lee family, who owns a large portion of the land, has proposed building a golf course for the University of Florida on the property. The plan no longer includes residential housing. While the updated plan reduces the impact on the environment, there are concerns about developing ecologically sensitive land. The property is home to various wildlife and is connected to the aquifer, which provides fresh drinking water. The Lee family’s plan will need to go through multiple phases of approval before any development can proceed. If approved, the golf course will be built on a portion of the land. The Lee family is also seeking a conservation easement to protect the remaining land from development. The approval process is expected to take about nine to twelve months. The county is committed to balancing development needs with environmental preservation.
