Controversy Surrounding Shady Side Academy Girls Basketball Coach

Shady Side Academy girls basketball coach Jonna Burke has won a temporary injunction that could help her avoid a one-year coaching suspension. The ruling came after a federal lawsuit was filed against the PIAA for imposing the suspension due to recruiting violations. Burke’s lawsuit sought a permanent injunction, and a U.S. Magistrate Judge ruled in her favor during a recent hearing. The PIAA had initially suspended Burke for one year after finding her in violation of recruiting rules. This decision came after parents of a player from South Fayette High School reported that they had been contacted by Burke on social media, asking if they were interested in Shady Side Academy. Burke defended herself, stating that she messaged the parents only after they followed her account on the platform. The WPIAL, in response to the complaint, suspended Burke for one year, a decision that was upheld by the PIAA. However, the lawsuit claims that Burke and Shady Side Academy were not provided with a written copy of the complaint prior to the hearing. Shady Side Academy is also suing the PIAA for the same reason. Burke, who has an extensive coaching career, has accumulated over 500 wins as a head coach, with two seasons at Shady Side Academy and previous stints at Bethel Park and Butler.
