The power of football brought enemies together for a Christmas truce and ceasefire after the first few months of World War One. German and Allied soldiers played together and exchanged conversations all along the Western Front in December 1914. It was a brief pause in the bloodshed for tens of thousands of combatants. Football will be the focus again next weekend as two service teams come together for a Remembrance charity match in Moray. All proceeds from the game at Mosset Park – home of Forres Mechanics – will go to the Royal British Legion. Teams from 39 Engineer Regiment at Kinloss Barracks and RAF Lossiemouth will contest the match which will honour all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in war and conflicts. Kinloss Sappers, who play in the Forres and Nairn Welfare League, will bid farewell to their captain and coach for whom this will be their final game with the team. Both teams are looking forward to taking part and raising funds for such a worthy cause. A spokesperson for hosts Forres Mechanics said: “We are extremely pleased to be able to offer Mosset Park to host the Remembrance Charity Match. Forres Mechanics FC have been associated with the two services for many years and continue to forge strong links with our military neighbours. The charity fixture allows both military teams the opportunity to compete in a competitive match under our new floodlights and for the local community to attend, remember and support this worthwhile cause in memory of all those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.” The game will take place on Wednesday, November 15 and entrance will be by donation. The gates open at 6.30pm and kick off is 7pm.
