John Millman’s Emotional Farewell from Tennis

John Millman, the 34-year-old tennis player, has announced that the upcoming Australian Open will mark the end of his career. Due to persistent injuries, he is forced into an early retirement after the 2024 season. Millman, currently ranked No.436, plans to participate in the United Cup and then aim to qualify for the Australian Open. He expressed his emotions, saying, “Unfortunately age has caught up to me. The body is really broken down. It’s been a fantastic career, but I’m ready to try something else.” Reflecting on his 2023 campaign, which was marred by injuries, Millman described the decision to retire as “really difficult.” He highlighted the impact of injuries on his performance, stating, “I think at the end of every year you kind of assess where you’re at mentally and physically. At the end of last year and (after) having quite an encouraging Australian Open summer series, I was ready to go again, but one back injury after another has really halted my progression this season.” Millman expressed frustration about the nagging injuries, acknowledging that his level of play is still top-100 but his body no longer allows him to compete consistently. Despite the challenges, he remains proud of his fighting spirit and determination, attributing it to his upbringing and hard-working family. Millman hopes to be remembered as someone who always gave his best, representing the values of hard work and perseverance. He emphasized, “I come from humble beginnings, a humble background, a hard-working family, and I hope that’s what I showed on the court. Someone who could walk off and know that he gave absolutely everything.”
