The University of Houston Tennis program wrapped up its fall season with a bang at the Big 12 Individual Championships at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The team secured a total of nine wins, with standout performances from several players.
Sophomore sensation Sophie Schouten and freshman Nina Skoric both impressed with two singles wins each, while senior Laura Slisane ended the weekend on a high note with a singles victory of her own. Additionally, junior Maria Dzemeshkevich and Slisane teamed up to secure two of Houston’s four doubles wins. Doubles pairs Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Gabriela Cortes, along with Sonya Kovalenko and Schouten, also contributed with wins.
In the singles matches, Schouten defeated Victoire de Samucewicz (Cincinnati) and Danielle Tuhten (Baylor), while Skoric triumphed over Jillian Harkin (Kansas State) and Isabel Pacheco (Cincinnati). Slisane also secured a win against Zuzanna Frankouska (Baylor).
The doubles matches saw Dzemeshkevich and Slisane dominating their opponents, as did Cortijo Parreno and Cortes, Schouten and Kovalenko, and Skoric and Trencheva.
The team’s impressive performance sets the stage for an exciting 2024 spring season, which kicks off on Sunday, Jan. 28 against Louisiana at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. Fans are encouraged to attend all home matches free of charge, with no student claim necessary.
