Sam Snead’s Historic Masters Trophy: A Piece of Golf History Up for Grabs

Sam Snead’s historic Masters-winning trophy is now up for auction, giving golf enthusiasts a rare opportunity to own a piece of Masters history. The trophy, engraved with ‘Masters Tournament, Augusta National Golf Club, Sam Snead 1949, 282’, represents Snead’s first of three titles at Augusta National and the inaugural awarding of a Green Jacket to the champion. With 82 PGA Tour wins between 1936 and 1965, Snead’s victory in 1949 was secured by three shots, propelled by back-to-back 67s on the weekend.

The trophy, a sterling silver on wood base “clubhouse” trophy, measures 13.5″ wide by 6.5″ tall and weighs 20 lbs. Unlike other Major championships, replicas of Masters trophies are not produced. The front of the trophy is engraved with the tournament details and includes a letter of provenance from Sam Snead’s son, Jack Snead. The item is expected to command over $1 million at auction, following the sale of a blank Masters Trophy for over $500,000 in 2021.

Known as ‘Slammin’ Sam’, Snead’s legacy includes 135 worldwide wins, three Masters, three PGA Championships, and one Open Championship. His remarkable career spanned six decades, and his record tally of 82 PGA Tour wins is shared with Tiger Woods. Renowned for his sweet swing, Snead holds several records, including eight wins at the Greater Greensboro Open. His final victory at the age of 52 years, 10 months, and eight days made him the oldest winner in US Tour history. Additionally, Snead is the oldest player to make a cut, achieving this at the 1979 Manufacturers Hanover Westchester Classic at the age of 67 years, two months, and 21 days.

The auction of Sam Snead’s historic trophy presents a unique opportunity for golf enthusiasts to own a piece of sporting history. With its rich legacy and significance in golf history, the trophy is expected to attract considerable attention and command a high price at auction.
