The State of Grassroots Football in Powys

let’s talk about grassroots football in Powys! It’s really taking off, with more and more people getting involved. We’ve got some great women’s teams like Welshpool Town and Berriew joining Llanfair United in the Welsh structure this season. And the junior league is buzzing with 35 teams playing in four leagues for ages 12-16. For the younger ones, there’s non-competitive football through a ‘festival’ structure, giving hundreds of kids regular football for their local teams.

But here’s the kicker – the facilities are not up to scratch. We’ve got a chronic shortage of good quality pitches, especially when the weather’s wet. Powys Girls Football is doing its best, running regular events and setting up competitive leagues, but the lack of good pitches is a real problem.

The good news is that 3G pitches are making a difference, especially in Llanidloes and Llanfyllin. They’re a game-changer, allowing teams to play in all weather conditions. But here’s the bummer – in Welshpool, Llanfair, Newtown, and Llanfair, there are no 3G pitches available for our kids to use regularly, despite promises by Powys County Council.

This needs to change, and fast. Our communities deserve better, and it’s about time we address this issue. Let’s hope things improve soon!
