Are you a golf enthusiast who loves the game but struggles with your scorecard? Well, you’re not alone! The Mediocre Golf Association has got you covered. This association is all about having fun on the golf course, regardless of your skill level. And guess what? A new chapter is set to open in 2024, right here on the Lower Shore.
So, what’s the deal with the Lower Shore Chapter of the Mediocre Golf Association? It’s all about making golf more accessible and enjoyable for local players. Tim Brennan and Mike Conklin, members of the Kent Island Chapter, saw the need for a more convenient golfing experience. They realized that the Ocean City area and Delaware beaches are teeming with golf enthusiasts, so they decided to bring the MGA down here.
The Lower Shore Chapter is gearing up for its first tournament in March, followed by monthly tournaments from March to October. But don’t be fooled by the word ‘mediocre’ in the association’s name. While the MGA is all about fun, it takes its golf seriously. The opening tournament, Rebel Beach Am-Am, is a playful take on the PGA’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the trophies are designed to bring a smile to your face.
What’s great about the MGA is that it caters to golfers of all skill levels. It’s not just about winning; it’s about enjoying the game with fellow enthusiasts. In fact, the MGA was founded by casual golfers who wanted the thrill of tournament play without the pressure of being top-notch players.
Now, here’s the twist – handicaps are used in a unique way. Instead of giving an advantage to less skilled players, the MGA penalizes the good golfers. If you’re too good, you’ll have strokes added to your score. The MGA believes that a ‘bogey golfer’ – someone who shoots around 90 on a par 72 course – is the ideal mediocre spot. And if you’re shooting under 80, well, you’re just too good for this league!
The Lower Shore Chapter aims to create a welcoming environment for golfers of all ages and genders. Whether you’re 18 or still swinging a club in your golden years, you’re welcome to join in the fun. And here’s the best part – men and women compete against each other in the tournaments. The chapter plans to host tournaments in southern Maryland and Delaware, making it convenient for local golfers.
Affordability is also a priority for the MGA. The annual fee has been kept under $50, and the cost of tournaments is expected to stay below $100 per person. So, if you’re looking for a fun and budget-friendly golfing experience, the MGA has got you covered.
If you’re interested in joining the Lower Shore Chapter or want to learn more about the MGA, you can visit mgatour.com or email [email protected]. It’s all about having a good time on the golf course, and as Tim Brennan puts it, you can make it as serious or as laid-back as you want it to be.
