Hey everyone, there’s this awesome event happening in Okotoks to support adaptive athletes and help them chase their sports dreams. The 2023 Cederstrand Foundation Sledge Hockey Tournament is happening at the Centennial Arenas on Nov. 25. It’s all about raising money to help cover the costs of equipment for adaptive athletes so they can get out there and play the sports they love.
Chris Cederstrand, the prez of the Cederstrand Foundation and a former Team Canada sledge hockey player, talked about the challenges adaptive athletes face in getting the gear they need. He mentioned how expensive para ice-hockey equipment can be, with sleds costing around a grand and other adaptive sports gear reaching up to five grand. Chris, who lost his leg in a workplace accident, also shared how sports had a huge impact on his life and why he’s so committed to helping other adaptive athletes overcome financial barriers.
The foundation has already made a real difference in helping young athletes reach their goals. One standout athlete, Hailey King, was able to join the Canadian women’s national team after getting a sled from the foundation. Chris is thrilled to see these athletes succeed, saying it’s like living through them in a way.
This tournament has been in the works for ages and it’s a big deal for the foundation. There’ll be six teams playing, including ones led by local celebs like Okotoks Mayor Tanya Thorn, as well as sports stars and NHL alums.
The tourney isn’t just about raising money though. It’s also a chance to introduce more people to the tough and rewarding sport of sledge hockey. Chris stressed how hard it is and the skill and strength needed to do well in sledge hockey. Plus, there’ll be a try-it sledge activity so folks can get a feel for the sport and support the foundation with donations.
On top of the on-ice fun, there’ll be a silent auction and chances for peeps to donate to the charity. If you’re curious about sledge hockey, there’ll be a come try it rollersled for you to experience the sport without hitting the ice.
I really think this tourney is going to be a blast and make a real impact. It’s a great chance for the community to back local athletes in chasing their sports dreams. Everyone is welcome to come out and support the adaptive athletes and the Cederstrand Foundation. To find out more about the event and the foundation, head to cederstrandfoundation.com.
