Unity in Sports: A Heartfelt Display of Solidarity

The Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait saw a large turnout of supporters for a World Cup qualifier match featuring thousands of Palestinians and their allies. This emotional event took place after the game was moved from the occupied West Bank to Kuwait due to the Israel-Hamas war, marking Palestine’s first match in front of fans since the war’s start. Anfal Al-Azmi, a 45-year-old Kuwaiti woman, expressed her support, stating, “Palestine is in our hearts. We came to the stadium, old and young, in support.” Despite the intense emotions and strong support, Australia secured a 1-0 victory with defender Harry Souttar’s 18th-minute goal. The match, however, seemed secondary to the larger message being conveyed by the attendees. Wael Youssef Labbad, a 40-year-old Palestinian from Ashkelon, Israel, declared, “We, the Palestinian people, are always present with the keffiyeh and the flag.” The stadium was filled with the iconic red, black, white, and green flag of Palestine, along with supporters twirling the distinctive keffiyehs and chanting in solidarity. Additionally, “Free Gaza” banners and images of keys, symbolizing the homes lost by Palestinians during the Nakba, were displayed. Amid the poignant atmosphere, Australia’s players announced their intention to donate a portion of their match fee to humanitarian operations in Gaza, acknowledging the dire situation. Coach Graham Arnold, expressing concern described the conditions in Gaza as “horrific.” Notably, the show of solidarity was not limited to Palestinians, as many individuals from the Gulf country, including Kuwait, attended the event to extend their support. Ahmed Al-Anezi, a Kuwaiti attendee draped in the Palestinian flag and keffiyeh, stated, “Kuwait and Palestine are one. Today, we are guests of Palestine in their land.” The event drew support from people of various backgrounds, transcending national boundaries. With a heartfelt message, Syrian university student Yahya Shaher, 18, emphasized unity, declaring, “We are here to support our brothers. We are one, and victory is ours.”
