Unveiling the Secrets of Golf Course Design: A Unique Opportunity for Aspiring Architects

The inaugural Design Boot Camp offers a one-of-a-kind chance for individuals with a passion for golf course design to unleash their creativity on the prestigious grounds of Erin Hills Golf Course, the iconic host of the 2017 U.S. Open Championship. Scheduled to take place from September 10-13, 2024, the American Society of Golf Course Architects Foundation is set to facilitate this exclusive golf workshop, which is poised to revolutionize the world of golf course design.

Limited to just 16 participants, the Design Boot Camp will provide aspiring designers with the opportunity to collaborate with seasoned architects who have transitioned into becoming instructors for this unique event. These include the renowned trio of Dr. Mike Hurdzan, ASGCA; Dana Fry, ASGCA; and Ron Whitten, the acclaimed designers behind Erin Hills. Additionally, a lineup of distinguished ASGCA Past Presidents, such as Jeff Blume, Tom Marzolf, and Jan Bel Jan, will contribute their expertise to enhance the educational experience.

The carefully curated curriculum will revolve around the design of new holes on the untouched property adjacent to the championship layout. Participants will have the opportunity to assess the natural features of the site before translating their vision onto paper through the creation of a routing and strategy plan, conceptual grading and drainage, and a comprehensive design plan. Throughout the event, the instructors will delve into the technical aspects of golf architecture, including design philosophy, routing, topography, hazard placement, and green design.

A highlight of the Design Boot Camp is the “grand unveiling,” during which each group of students, partnered with two architects, will collaborate to route and detail four to five holes that seamlessly connect to form a cohesive “fantasy” second Erin Hills golf course.

Participants and architects alike will be accommodated in spacious golf cottages at Erin Hills, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. In addition to the design curriculum, attendees will have the opportunity to play a round of golf on the original Erin Hills course, as well as the 5-hole “Kettle Loop,” and engage in a friendly competition on the Drumlin putting course.

The enrollment fee of $20,000 per person, with $15,000 eligible for a charitable tax deduction to the ASGCA Foundation (501c3 EIN: 23-7385866), includes all Design Boot Camp materials and supplies, lodging, food and beverages, golf, caddies, and gratuities, special gifts, and mementos. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the event page on the website at Architects Boot Camp 2024 – ASGCA Foundation for a detailed schedule and further information, or to reach out via email at [email protected] for enrollment or specific inquiries. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this revolutionary learning experience in the world of golf course design!
