Lacey Owen, the second-row player for York Valkyrie, has had an amazing 2023 season. She was crowned a Women’s Super League champion and achieved her first England cap. Along with 19 other York players, Owen signed a two-year professional contract, marking a historic moment for women’s rugby league.
Owen’s love for rugby started at the age of 11. Despite limited opportunities for girls’ rugby in her hometown of Castleford, West Yorkshire, she pursued her passion for the sport. After joining Castleford Tigers in the Women’s Super League at the age of 16, Owen quickly rose to the top of her game.
While she excelled as a fly-half and outside centre in rugby union, Owen found her calling as a second row in the league. She is determined to develop her skills from the 15-a-side code to further her performance in the league.
After a temporary break from the sport in 2021, Owen resumed her career with York, where she secured a Grand Final triumph and earned her first England cap. Her exceptional performance led to her being offered a two-year professional contract, a groundbreaking achievement for women in rugby league.
Despite her new professional status, Owen remains committed to her day job at Castleford Academy. She is passionate about inspiring the next generation of female rugby players in her community and has become a role model for young girls at her school.
Looking ahead, Owen is determined to continue her success with York Valkyrie. She aspires to win the Women’s Challenge Cup and lead her team to victory in the League Leaders’ Shield and Grand Final again in the 2024 season.
Owen’s dedication and perseverance have made her a true inspiration for young girls in rugby. She hopes to see more opportunities for women in the sport and is thrilled to be a part of the growing success of women’s rugby league.
