It is with great excitement that Nipissing University announced that the head coach of the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team, Mike McParland, has been awarded the 2023 OHF Bill Richmond Memorial Award. This prestigious honour was presented to him in recognition of his exceptional contribution and involvement in hockey development, as nominated by Ted Zajac.
The OHF Bill Richmond Memorial Award was established in 1996 to acknowledge individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and commitment to hockey development within the Branch. Mr. Richmond, in whose memory the award was created, played a pivotal role in the National Coaches Certification Program (NCCP) for over two decades. His sudden passing in 1995 left behind a legacy of dedication and hard work towards the advancement of the game in our Branch.
McParland’s remarkable efforts and contributions have undoubtedly made a significant positive impact on numerous individuals who have been part of the program over the years. The Nipissing Lakers Athletics expressed in a release that his dedication and influence have reverberated throughout the organization and beyond.
Since the inception of the Lakers varsity men’s hockey program in 2009, McParland has been at the helm as the sole coach. His leadership and coaching prowess have propelled the team to great success, earning him the title of OUA East Division coach of the year in 2022.
