Derby City Council has reached a significant milestone in the development of a new football and community hub at Derby Racecourse. The construction of this sports complex, with an estimated cost of £11.9 million, is being undertaken by Universal Civils and Build, and has now reached the topping-out stage, signaling the completion of the roof. This new facility aims to address the city’s shortage of football pitches, with plans to include three full-size 3G pitches as well as the refurbishment of an existing one. Additionally, the hub will feature a community cafe, meeting space, and increased parking to enhance accessibility.
The funding for this project is a collaborative effort between Derby City Council, the Premier League, the FA, and the Football Foundation. Upon completion, the National Football Trust will oversee the management of the facilities, while day-to-day operations will be managed by Leisure United. Throughout the ongoing development, the grass pitches have remained open as scheduled, allowing local football teams to return to the Racecourse for league games. The project is scheduled for completion in early 2024, including the imminent work on the turf.
Councillor Hardyal Dhindsa, cabinet member for communities and Streetpride at Derby City Council, expressed that the topping-out phase signifies a significant achievement. He emphasized the multifunctional aspect of the hub, highlighting its state-of-the-art facilities for grassroots football and the creation of inviting community spaces within Racecourse Park.
Martin Glenn, chair of the Football Foundation, noted that the new facilities will not only benefit sport in Derby but also provide a communal space for local residents. He acknowledged the contributions from funding partners, including the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, in making more hubs like this available nationwide for public access to sports facilities.
The project at Derby Racecourse exemplifies a valuable investment in the community, promoting active lifestyles and fostering togetherness. With its anticipated completion in 2024, this new hub is poised to make a positive impact on sports and community engagement in Derby.
