Corstorphine Cougars Revamp Clubhouse with £250,000 Grant from Scottish Rugby

Corstorphine Cougars have been awarded a commendable £250,000 grant from the Scottish Rugby’s ‘Growth & Participation Fund’. This fund was established following a £5 million low-interest loan allocated to Murrayfield in December 2020, as part of a £20 million Scottish Government Covid-19 support package for the sport. The primary objective of this fund is to aid clubs in enhancing their physical infrastructure, encompassing the procurement, enhancement, or construction of clubhouse facilities.

With this substantial funding, the Cougars are preparing for an extensive redevelopment of their existing clubhouse at Union Park in West Edinburgh. The planned renovations will encompass the installation of new changing facilities, two rooms available for community use, and a dedicated gym space.

Steve Wright, the Vice President of Corstorphine Cougars, expressed his enthusiasm about the news, citing that the funding is “game-changing” for the club. With four senior teams already in operation, the financial support will allow them to elevate their facilities to align with their ambitious plans for the future.

The club’s pavilion, constructed in the 19th century, is in dire need of significant refurbishment. Without intervention, it was at risk of substantial deterioration. The grant from Scottish Rugby is perceived as crucial in providing the club with the platform to enhance and preserve their facility for years to come.

While the men’s and youth sections will greatly benefit from the redevelopment, the women’s section, one of the largest in Scotland, is expected to gain the most from the enhancements. Creating an environment where they can focus on fitness off the rugby pitch is crucial for their continued success at the highest level of the sport.

Gavin Scott, the Director of Rugby Development, also conveyed his delight at the investment, underscoring the significance of the upgrades in attracting and retaining players. The inclusion of a gym space is particularly noteworthy, providing a significant enhancement for all players, including those involved in the Premiership league and programs within Scottish Rugby’s performance pathway.

In conclusion, this funding from Scottish Rugby marks a significant advancement for Corstorphine Cougars, enabling them to modernize their facilities and establish an environment that will benefit all members of the club. The comprehensive redevelopment is a testament to the club’s dedication to continual improvement and expansion.
