Ronan O’Gara summoned before French disciplinary committee ahead of Leinster match

La Rochelle’s head coach, Ronan O’Gara, is scheduled to appear before a French disciplinary committee next week, following reports of behavioral issues during his team’s Top 14 defeat to Racing 92 last weekend. O’Gara, who faced disciplinary hearings three times last season, now faces further trouble as his team prepares for their Champions Cup clash with Leinster.

The conduct of the former Munster and Ireland out-half has been called into question in a report filed by the match officials, adding to the strain on his team’s current 11th position in the Top 14 table after a challenging start to the new season. This disruption comes at an inconvenient time, threatening to overshadow La Rochelle’s upcoming match against Leinster.

Apart from O’Gara’s summons, the team also faces the potential absence of winger Teddy Thomas, who may be banned following his ejection from the same Racing game. La Rochelle’s disciplinary concerns are further exacerbated with the news that centre Chris Farrell, formerly of Ireland, Munster, and Ulster, is also required to appear before the disciplinary committee due to a yellow card incident during Oyonnax’s recent victory over Montpellier.

A statement from Ligue Nationale Rugby (LNR) regarding O’Gara’s hearing reads: “At the end of the aforementioned meeting, the match officials appointed during this meeting reported the behavior of Mr. Ronan O’Gara, Coach of Stade Rochelais. The situation in question is likely to constitute an infringement of the General Regulations of the LNR and the FFR. Mr. Ronan O’Gara and the Stade Rochelais club are summoned before the Disciplinary and Regulations Commission at its meeting on December 6, 2023. Mr. Ronan O’Gara is not suspended pending this hearing.”

These disciplinary actions overshadow La Rochelle’s current standings in the Top 14 and raise doubts about their ability to focus on their upcoming fixtures, potentially impacting their performance in the Champions Cup. O’Gara’s appearance before the committee raises concerns about his leadership and the impact of these distractions on the team’s prospects in the league and the upcoming European match.

As the rugby community awaits the outcome of the disciplinary hearings, the focus is on how these incidents will affect La Rochelle’s performance in the crucial fixtures ahead. The team will need to promptly address these disciplinary issues and regain their focus to confront the challenges in the competitions they are set to participate in.
