BU’s Lane Hutson Crowned Hockey East Defender of the Month

In an announcement issued by the league on Thursday, Lane Hutson, a sophomore from the Boston University men’s ice hockey team, was honoured as the Hockey East Defender of the Month. This recognition marks Hutson’s third time receiving the accolade, following his previous titles in October and November 2022, as well as being named Hockey East Player of the Month for January 2023.

Hutson’s outstanding performance in November significantly contributed to BU’s 4-1-0 record against top-10 opponents, culminating in a 6-2-0 record for the month with just one regulation loss. Notably, Hutson emerged as a standout blue liner in the Hockey East, leading with six goals and five assists, accumulating a total of 11 points for the month, ranking second among all league defensemen. His accomplishments included three multi-point games, featuring a remarkable hat trick against then-No. 3/4 North Dakota and two assists each against then-No. 9 Maine and then-No. 3 Quinnipiac. Furthermore, Hutson began the month on a four-game goal streak and maintained a seven-game point streak before the game against Cornell.

Hailing from North Barrington, Illinois, Hutson currently leads all NCAA defensemen with eight goals and has also tallied eight assists, resulting in a total of 16 points, placing him in a tie for fourth among NCAA blue liners. Noteworthy is his consistency, evidenced by being held without a point only three times this season. His impressive career tally stands at 64 points in just 52 games, with a total of 23 goals and 41 assists.

The Boston University men’s ice hockey team has a track record of receiving monthly accolades from Hockey East. Since Case McCarthy’s recognition as Hockey East Defender of the Month for November 2021, there has only been one instance in February 2023 where at least one Terrier did not receive a monthly award from the league. Overall, BU has claimed 13 monthly awards from the league, including seven Defender of the Month honours.

As the semester draws to a close, BU is set to face off against Merrimack in a home-and-home series, with the first game taking place in North Andover on Friday night, and the second game concluding on Saturday at Agganis Arena.
