Tennis enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the inaugural Open Tour National Doubles Championship, which is being organized by Tennis Scotland. The prestigious tournament is scheduled to take place at Glasgow’s Scotstoun Tennis Centre from 9-12 November and will showcase top talent from various divisions.
Scottish tennis star Scott Duncan, who recently achieved the 222nd position in the world rankings, will be the headline act of the event. Duncan, a member of the Barnton Park club, will partner with English player Marcus Willis, known for his memorable appearance alongside Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2016. The duo is expected to bring their best game to the tournament, having previously secured a spot in Wimbledon’s centre court after a successful qualifying round.
Additionally, the championship will feature Mai Lumsden, the British No. 1 women’s doubles player and Wimbledon quarter-finalist, who will team up with fellow Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) player, Ali Collins.
The event will also see participation from well-established players such as Hamish Stewart, Euan Stewart, Euan Lumsden, and Ewan Moore, who have all made significant contributions to the ITF World Tennis Tour. The GB National Tennis Academy at the University of Stirling will also be represented by players like Charlie Robertson and Henry Jefferson.
With a prize pot of £10,000, the championship is set to be the premier doubles-only tournament in Britain, attracting players from diverse backgrounds. Entry to the event will be free, allowing fans to enjoy world-class tennis without any barriers.
In a statement, Mike Cohen, Head of Competitions & Events at Tennis Scotland, emphasized the competitive nature of the TS Open Tour and the opportunity it presents for players to test their skills against some of the finest doubles specialists in the sport.
The championship will also include a Tie-Break Ten-style friendly invitational for young Scottish junior players, fostering the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among budding talents.
Blane Dodds, Chief Executive of Tennis Scotland, expressed gratitude for the new sponsorship that has enabled the tournament to offer enhanced prize money, recognizing the pivotal role it plays in supporting the professional development of young, aspiring players.
As the countdown to the championship begins, the tennis community is looking forward to witnessing the exceptional displays of athleticism that are set to grace the courts of the Scotstoun Tennis Centre.
