Tough Loss for Kenwood Academy Boys’ Basketball Team

Kenwood Academy’s boys’ basketball team, revered as a top-ranking force, encountered a setback following their recent defeat by the seventh-ranked Thornton Township High School. The highly anticipated game culminated in a 52-45 victory for Thornton at the Chicago Elite Classic.

The game was characterized by intense competition, with both teams striving for dominance in the initial two quarters. The Wildcats managed to secure a narrow 20-19 lead over the Broncos at halftime. However, Kenwood faltered in offensive maneuvers and free throw attempts, with Thornton successfully converting 15 out of 19 while Kenwood only managed five out of 12. Furthermore, the Wildcats accumulated 17 offensive rebounds and committed 23 turnovers.

Adding to the challenge, promising freshman guard Devin Cleveland was compelled to exit the game due to injury, with an anticipated recovery period spanning several weeks. Nonetheless, senior center Jaden “Jumpman” Smith, standing at 6-11, delivered an impressive performance, registering 16 points, six rebounds, and four blocks throughout the game.

In spite of the defeat, Smith remains convinced that the current roster boasts greater talent than its predecessor. He underscored the necessity for cohesion within the team while acknowledging the leadership of senior forwards Calvin Robbins, Jr. and Chris Riddle.

The game also heralded the return of head coach Mike Irvin, following a two-game suspension. Irvin conveyed the imperative need for the team to exercise greater care in ball management and enhance collective play. Furthermore, the team exudes confidence regarding the upcoming season, notwithstanding the absence of recent graduate Dai Dai Ames.

Looking towards the future, the Broncos are poised to confront Lindblom Math and Science Academy on Tuesday, the 5th of December, followed by a game against Brooks College Prep on Thursday, the 7th of December. Coach Irvin has set the objective of securing participation in the Urbana-Champaign tournament, and is resolute in his commitment to guide the team towards further advancement in the season.
