Arizona Coyotes forward Liam O’Brien and defenseman Sean Durzi recently participated in an adaptive hockey clinic hosted by Mikey’s League, an organization dedicated to supporting children and young adults with neurodivergent disabilities. The event, which aimed to provide an inclusive sports opportunity for individuals with and without physical or cognitive disabilities, took place at the Ability360 Sports & Fitness Center in Phoenix.
O’Brien, who has a personal connection to the cause due to his mother’s experience in working with children with autism, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to work with kids who share similar disabilities to those his mother has worked with in the past. He attributed his passion for giving back to his parents, particularly his father, who has been an active figure in the hockey community.
The collaboration between the Arizona Coyotes and Mikey’s League aims to expand the reach of adaptive hockey programs and offer more opportunities for neurodivergent groups. Tyler Millar, the Coordinator of Hockey Development DEI for the Coyotes, highlighted the team’s commitment to diversifying and growing the sport of hockey while removing barriers that may restrict accessibility to the game.
The clinic, which attracted approximately 50 participants, was a meaningful experience for both the attendees and the Coyotes players who were present. O’Brien expressed his delight in being able to contribute to such a meaningful cause and emphasized the importance of engaging in activities that have a positive impact on others.
Going forward, the Coyotes and Mikey’s League aspire to broaden their efforts and potentially incorporate on-ice sessions in the future. The presence of NHL players at these events has proven to be inspirational for the participants, who demonstrate great enthusiasm in engaging with the players and participating in the activities.
For O’Brien and Durzi, the clinic was a rewarding experience, reaffirming the value of giving back to the community. O’Brien expressed his enjoyment and fulfillment from being able to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the clinic participants, noting that he always seeks out opportunities to engage in such activities.
The partnership between the Arizona Coyotes and Mikey’s League serves as a testament to the team’s commitment to community outreach and providing inclusive opportunities for individuals with disabilities. O’Brien’s involvement in the clinic reflects the team’s dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, both on and off the ice.
