Blugolds Dominate Weekend Games at Home

The men’s hockey team of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire enjoyed a successful weekend at their home arena, securing two impressive victories against rival teams. The team managed to defeat UW-Superior with a shutout score of 4-0 and engaged in a closely contested battle against UW-Stout, ultimately emerging victorious with a 4-3 win in overtime.

According to Blugold Athletics, the team had only played three games at their home arena before this weekend due to the majority of their games being played away from home. The recent wins have undoubtedly helped establish the team’s strong presence in their home arena.

Matt Loen, who has been coaching the team for 17 years, emphasized the importance of playing well at home and earning valuable points in the WIAC. As an alumnus of UW-Eau Claire hockey, Loen understands the significance of home games in boosting team morale and confidence.

Third-year marketing student and forward on the team, Kyle Oleksiuk commended the team’s dedication and determination in securing the victories. He also acknowledged the upcoming challenge of playing against UW-Stout and the importance of performing well in the face of such strong competition.

The game against UW-Stout proved to be tense, with the Blugolds ultimately clinching the win in overtime before a crowd of 836 people at Hobbs Ice Arena, showcasing the support and enthusiasm from the fans for the Blugolds’ hockey team.

Looking ahead, the team aims to continue their winning streak as they prepare to face both UW-Superior and UW-Stout again later in the season. Coach Loen emphasized the team’s commitment to growth and improvement, with a focus on building confidence and unity as they progress through the season.

With a commendable record of eight wins, two losses, and one tie in the 11 games played so far, the Blugolds are poised for a strong second half of the season. Their next home game is scheduled for December 8 at Hobbs Ice Arena, where they will face UW-Stevens Point.
