Former Danish tennis champion, Caroline Wozniacki, has been granted a wildcard entry to the forthcoming Australian Open. This marks her return to the prestigious tournament in Melbourne after a four-year absence, having last triumphed in 2018.
At 33 years of age, Wozniacki chose to retire from professional tennis following the 2020 Australian Open in order to focus on starting a family. However, she made a comeback to the sport at the Montreal Open in August. Recently, she participated in her first Grand Slam in three years at the US Open, where she advanced to the last 16.
Upon reflecting on her previous victory in Melbourne, Wozniacki expressed her deep affection for the tournament, citing it as one of the highlights of her career. She fondly recalled the thrill of emerging victorious in the 2018 final, where she defeated Simona Halep. The Danish tennis star also conveyed her comfort and familiarity with the Australian Open, emphasizing her appreciation for the courts, the playing conditions, and the passionate supporters.
In a formal statement, Wozniacki expressed her gratitude for being granted the wildcard entry, conveying her excitement at the prospect of competing once again at the Australian Open in January. Despite currently being ranked 242nd in the world, she remains optimistic about her performance in the upcoming tournament.
With plans to bring her two-year-old daughter, Olivia, and one-year-old son, James, Wozniacki is eager to participate in the first Grand Slam of the year. She intends to travel to Melbourne from her residence in Miami, where she resides with her spouse, former NBA player David Lee.
The Australian Open, scheduled to take place from January 14th to 28th, will see Aryna Sabalenka defending the women’s title and Novak Djokovic defending the men’s title. As preparations for the tournament unfold, Wozniacki remains focused on making a strong comeback and delivering an impressive performance on the court.
